Bib·li·o·phile Fridays #16 – Author Appreciation!

bf

Bibliophile Fridays is a weekly meme hosted by me (Whoo Gives A Hoot) and Foxes and Fairy Tales on our blogs and for more information you can check out our Goodreads group. We have created this weekly meme in honor of the bibliophile population (we are a dying breed you know)! We are super excited to share this with our readers and we hope you will all join us in our fight to raise awareness for the bibliophile population…

This weeks theme is… Author Appreciation! Pick 1 author you love and then choose 5 of their books to feature OR choose 5 authors and 1 of your favorite books from them! It’s up to you! 🙂

Since I had a lot of trouble picking 5 authors I decided to randomly choose 5 that I’ve discovered in the last year! Hope you all enjoy my picks! 🙂 – BTW this is going to be a super short one this time around.

3. Fighting For Alexa (Fallen Heroes #2) by Jennifer Ann

I recently discovered Jennifer Ann late last year when I had the opportunity to read and review (click here to check it out) the first book in the Fallen Heroes (standalone) series, Fighting for Phoebe! Instantly I fell in love with her writing style and I’ve been following her ever since. I was super excited when I was given the chance to read Fighting For Alexa because it was just as extraordinary as the first book, if not more! Not only do I love her writing style, but I adore her amazing personality! We both recently discovered that she lives really close (less than 30 minutes away) to my parents home in Southern Minnesota! Hopefully (fingers crossed) that we have the chance to meet face to face soon! ❤

Synopsis

Sofia

I knew little of Raphael Amado’s history with my family, but when he turned up on our doorstep demanding restitution, my grandfather quickly conceded.

That restitution? Me.

Six months later, on my eighteenth birthday, Raphael came for me. He took me from my home to his Tuscan estate where from the crumbling chapel to the burnt-down vineyard, to the cellar that haunted him, the past followed him like a shadow. It waited for him, hid behind corners for him, and trapped him at every turn.

As much as Raphael’s cruelty terrified me, his darkness seduced me.

But in the end, it was his tenderness that devastated me.

Raphael

Sofia came to me like an offering. Like a virgin to be sacrificed at the altar. But truth was, her grandfather betrayed her. I guess we had that in common. He’d fucked me too.

I knew hate. I’d vowed vengeance. This was never supposed to be about anything else.

But in the end, her innocence broke me.

The very thing I would destroy, destroyed me.

Synopsis

What does one do with a matchmaking cat named Romeo?

Spirited and beautiful, Jillian Parker is one of Marietta’s newest business owners. Still, her mother worries about Jillian’s bare ring finger. So in order to give her mother something else to fuss over, Jillian adopts a cat named Romeo. He turns out to be anything but a docile lap cat.

One snowy night, Romeo makes a break for it. With Jillian right on his heels, they have a near miss with a passing pickup driven by Avery Wainwright, one of Jillian’s closest friends. A rodeo accident has the sexy cowboy returning home to recuperate, and he’s not happy about it.

So when Avery finds himself lassoed into the Bachelor Bake-Off, he turns to the one person who has always helped him out—Jillian. But will teaching him to take chances outside of the show ring have them both discovering that their feelings for each other run much deeper than they ever imagined?

Excerpt

They climbed in the sleigh and then Avery covered Jillian with a heavy lap blanket. “Are you ready?”

She nodded, clutching the thermos. “I am now.”

And then they were off, gliding over the snow. The snow muffled the sounds. And though the moon was hidden behind the clouds, it was still bright out. As they made their way through the field, Avery glanced over at Jillian. She was nestled beneath the plaid blanket and still clutching the thermos. She looked stunning. He should have brought her out here a long time ago.

“What are you smiling about?”

Jillian’s voice drew him from his thoughts. “Who’s smiling?”

“You are and you know it. So what’s up?”

“Nothing. I’m just enjoying the evening.” It was so much more than that, but he really didn’t want to risk ruining this moment. He’d worked so hard to pull it together. He wanted to savor their time together.

For a while they glided along in silence. He had a particular destination in mind. It didn’t have a name. It was just a spot where you could see for miles. And at night, it was like visiting a planetarium with all of the stars twinkling overhead.

“Are you warm enough?” he asked.

She nodded from inside her big, fuzzy hood. “I’m perfect. This is amazing. Do you take the sleigh out very often?”

He shook his head. “This is my first time. I usually come out here on horseback.” He slowed the horse to a stop before turning to Jillian. “I wanted to do something special for you. A way to thank you. You’ve always been there for me and my family, whether it was helping me with the Bake-Off or being the best nanny in the whole world.”

“You…you really think that?”

He’d obviously done a lousy job of communicating his thoughts in the past. He would have to do better going forward.

“I’m sorry I didn’t make that clear before.” He stared into her eyes. “I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my family.”

His gaze dipped to her lips. They were shiny and full. And he was overwhelmed with the desire to kiss her again. So what was holding him back?

They were all alone on this snowy evening. And as he’d come to discover while he was planning this evening, it was a very romantic setting. If he were ever to have a chance with her, it would start beneath the starlit sky. But should he risk it? Should he put himself out there again?

It wasn’t like he was asking her to marry him. It was a kiss—a simple, no-strings-attached kiss. It was a starting point.

He rested his arm over the back of the sleigh. His heart started to pound hard in his chest. He’d kissed a number of girls over the years on the rodeo circuit and he’d never put this much thought into it. But none of them had meant as much to him as Jillian. He leaned toward her.

Suddenly Jillian raised the thermos between them. “Hot chocolate?”

He settled back in his seat. Had he read the signs wrong? Was he that rusty where women were concerned?

Review

I generously received an ARC from L.WoodsPR & the author in exchange for an honest review…

Kristen Hope Mazzola has done it again! Cross Checked is another exceptional standalone novel in the Shots On Goal series! I throughly enjoyed this extraordinary book and can’t wait to read the next standalone in the series. This is a relatively short and fast paced story (although you might not guess that by how long it took me to read thanks to my busy schedule – lol) with characters you’ll instantly fall in love with.

Ever since reading the Hat Trick back in October 2016 I’ve been anticipating when this book was going to be released so you can imagine my surprise when I came across the news of this new release on Facebook! Instantly I jumped at the chance to once again read and review it! Brayden and Karla’s relationship is one I wanted desperately to see because they met in the first book, but they were both secondary characters in Hat Trick. They both had major parts in both books, but in this one we got to see how their romance came to be and their relationship backgrounds.

I adored everything about this book just as much as I did Hat Trick! Also, even though Cross Checked is considered to be a standalone novel I strongly suggest reading Hat Trick first because it helps to fill in the blanks throughout particular parts of the story. However, if you just want to jump right into book 2 it’ll still be just as enjoyable!

Review

I generously received an ARC from Enticing Journey Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review…

Wow. Can I just say WOW! Yet another book that left me completely speechless from the beginning to the end. This book was what I like to call a real page turner and it immediately captured my full attention. The opening scene in the prologue really gets the readers thinking about the underlining premise of the story and leaves them wondering what will happen next — behind every turn. At least that was the case for me.

Rhys was the very first book that I’ve read from this extraordinary author and I can’t wait to see what other titles this author has to offer. The author has a strong understanding at character development and knows how to keep her readers on the edge of their seats until the very end! There wasn’t a dull moment in the entire novel and I would consider it to be a relatively quick read even though it technically took me a few days to read because of my hectic schedule. This storyline has so many factors that contribute to the characters background and essentially added so much more to the story!

Overall, if you are looking for a book that is filled full of mystery and suspense then this is the book for you because it has all of that and more!

Synopsis

Leaving home for the first time to attend college is stressful enough. But when the roommate lottery of Paradise Valley University strikes, it produces couples who have absolutely nothing in common; causing personality clashes which takes the stress to a whole new level. Dismay hits Sidra Howard, the prim and proper princess, when she contemplates spending an entire semester with Chasity Parker, the troubled beauty with a sharp tongue and even sharper claws. Malajia Simmons, a boy crazed, attention seeking diva, is no happier. Not only does she get stuck with the upper bunk bed, she has to share a triple room with Alexandra Chisolm, a nosey and overbearing, self proclaimed “know-it-all”. But even the meddling Alexandra isn’t as bad as Emily Harris, the shy, mommy’s girl with a non-existent backbone.

Coming to college to escape her home life, Chasity hopes to get through the semester without any problems. Her hopes are tainted once she begins to have to resist the advances of a determined football star, on top of dealing with family drama which seems to have followed her. Alexandra’s need to fix everyone’s problems not only rubs her roommates the wrong way, it also causes her to fall blind to the problems brewing with the boyfriend that she left behind. Eventually she’ll be forced to face the issues head on. Emily’s refusal to come out of her shell is too much to handle for party girl Malajia, whose main purpose is to have fun and be seen. The same doesn’t apply to Sidra, who’s more concerned with trying to keep her over-the-top stress level under control.

These five young women try to handle family drama, pressure, and conflicts; all while trying to maintain their grades. They quickly learn that college life isn’t what they expected and must adapt to their new environment if they ever hope to make it through their first semester.

Excerpt

Annoyed, Chasity flung the door open and immediately wished she could slam it shut on the person standing in the threshold.

“Mom?”

Brenda Parker stared at her daughter, and all of the old resentment welled up. So beautiful and young was Chasity, such a constant reminder that Brenda would never be as pretty or as successful as her sister Patrisha. How she hated them both, with their looks and their attitudes.

“What are you doing here?” Chasity frowned, confused. She was certain that she would never receive a phone call from her mother, let alone a visit.

“Are you going to let me come in?”

“Do I have to?” Chasity replied, her hand still fixed to the doorknob.

With a disgruntled huff, Brenda pushed past her daughter, and looked around.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Chasity repeated, stepping away from the door.

“I’ve come to deliver some news,” she replied with a tight, hard smile.

“This sounds like something that’s going to piss me off.”

“Good thinking. At least you’re not entirely stupid.”

This is what Chasity had to grow up with, constantly being put down and criticized. And Alex thought I was lucky. How funny.

“Hurry up and say what you have to say, and get out,” Chasity spat out.

Sidra paused, wondering why the door was half open and who the hell Chasity was talking to. She wasn’t talking to anyone these days, except her professors. Chasity had been so distant, Sidra almost wished for the old Chasity. She could deal with the hostile bitch, but not the Ice Queen. Well, judging from the sounds coming from inside, hostile Chasity was back, and this was one conversation Sidra was not about to interrupt. But she’d be damned if she wasn’t going to eavesdrop.

“Chasity, I just want you to know that I don’t want you to return to my house ever again. I’m putting you out,” Brenda announced with less emotion than she used ordering takeout.

The flat statement, so coldly delivered, shocked Chasity. She wasn’t planning on going back anyway, but to hear her mother declare her unwelcome at home hurt. Chasity was surprised to find that it actually hurt, that her mother could still inflict pain.
