Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

I am so happy that I didn’t have tor wait to read this book, especially after that epic cliffhanger at the end of the first book! When I initially signed up for this ARC I had no clue that this book was part of a series, but luckily I received a copy of both books. Where do I begin? I think the most important part to note about this story is that it is not a standalone series, you need to read the first book in the Beautiful Game series before diving into this one. Trust me when I say if you don’t you will have a difficult understanding certain aspects of the story that were revealed in book 1.

Another thing about this amazing story that I must note is that the author (Karen Frances) know how to develop her characters in a way that they stay with you long after you finish the story. Honestly, there is so much that I want to say about this book and yet I’m lost for words because I don’t believe that they will do this book justice. I have say that I absolutely adored the chemistry that radiating off of the pages between Jess and Fletcher. Oh boy do these two have chemistry. Originally when I started reading this series I planned to read the first book one day and then the second book another day, but as soon as I reached the cliffhanger at the end I couldn’t wait and I immediately dived into the second one. I think that this series took me about four (may five) hours to finish because I literally couldn’t put it down. Nothing was left untouched and the book ended perfectly! I cannot wait to check out what else this author has to offer in the near future!

Synopsis

For every wound, there is a scar.

Raised on fame and fortune, Liam McGuire is a spoiled man-child. His handsome face blinds the world, but I see through it to what he is inside.

Ugly.

When his tour bus rolls off the road, Liam’s rushed to the hospital where I work. A jagged scar runs the length of his face, ruining his good looks and jeopardizing his career. As his nurse, I’m around him more than I’d like, but the more I get to know him, the more I realize the world wasn’t blind to him.

I was.

Liam McGuire feels deeply and loves wildly, throwing himself into everything he does with more passion than I ever dreamed possible. With that intensity aimed at me, the scars slashed across my own heart start to heal. He is fire and I’ve been cold my whole life.

Am I ready to thaw? Or is life better—safer—when I’m cold and numb?

Wounded Teaser 1.jpg

Excerpt

I close the front door behind me and head straight to the piano. Sit at the bench and stare out through the open window and play.

I play for them.

I play for Tyler.

I play for who Michael and I were, and for who we’ve become. The music rips itself out of me and tears fall from my eyes, dropping on my hands, but still I play.

Before long, I sense movement at the doorway. My fingers slow and then stop, cutting off the melody on a harsh note.

“Don’t stop.” Liam sounds groggy. “It’s beautiful.”

“It hurts,” I say, sniffing.

“Ahhh.” There’s more movement and then he’s sitting next to me, his shoulder pressing against mine, his sleep-warmed skin almost too hot for me in my agony. “That’s why it’s beautiful.”

I pull my hand from the keys and put them in my lap. “There’s nothing beautiful about pain.”

“Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain.”  Liam puts his hands on the keys, lets them wander around a melody. “I think Bob Dylan said that.”

The urge to lean into him, to borrow some strength from his size and his warmth is so strong I almost succumb to it.

Almost.

Instead, I put my hands on the keys and wind my melody around his.

“What’s wrong, Bailey?” Liam keeps his voice low, almost a whisper.

“It’s just a bad day,” I whisper in return.

His fingers chase the melody towards mine. His skin brushes mine and chills rush through my body. I stop playing and stare up at him.

“Why are you being nice to me?”

“Maybe I’m still mostly asleep.” Liam smiles, the moonlight streaming through the window catching the scar winding down his face.

Without thinking, I run my finger along it. My touch light, just a whisper of contact. “Does it still hurt?”

Liam leans into my hand, pressing my palm against his cheek, and closes his eyes. “Deeply.”

The low rumble of his voice touches the aching part of my soul and I know he’s not talking about the scar. I pull my hand away and study his face as he opens his eyes and stares down at me. The space between us takes on a life of its own, shrinking and contracting with each and every one of our breaths. I lean into him, needing contact. Needing sensation and oblivion and a reason to step outside of myself for a while.

“Today’s the day they died.” I blink several times but don’t look away. “My parents.”

“How?”

I shake my head and the world spins drunkenly. It hurts to be this exposed, as if my whole body is a raw nerve, our words grinding against it until the pain forces me to cry out.

“I’m sorry,” he says, bringing his hand to my cheek and threading his fingers into my hair.

I lean into him and close my eyes, swimming in grief and guilt, desperate to feel anything but the way I’m feeling right now. I lick my lips. Open my eyes and find him close. So close. He drops his hand from my cheek, his eyes searching my face.

There’s a moment. The two of us knowing what’s about to happen and trying to decide if we should let it, and then Liam kisses me. His hands slide up my arms and clutch my shoulders. His lips are warm and supple against mine. Our breath fills the room, twining with the rustle of fabric as I bring my hands to his back and grip his shirt in my fists.

I breathe him in. His clean skin and the scent of his cologne are so foreign to me. They’re unlike any of the smells that I sometimes imagine still linger around this house, triggering memories with the power to bring me to my knees. Liam is different. Nothing about him reminds me of my past, and there’s salvation there. Safety in his newness. In his total lack of knowledge of me from before. I can be anything with him.

Our kiss deepens, the stubble of his beard scraping the delicate skin on my cheeks. I open to him, lean into him, and his tongue darts out to meet mine.

He pulls back but keeps his hands on my face. “Have you been drinking?”

I nod. “It’s a bad day.”

Liam’s eyes burn into mine, moving across the planes of my face. He takes a breath like he wants to speak, only to close his mouth and look away. “I’m sorry, Bailey,” he says after a moment. “I don’t want this because you’re drunk and hurting. And I know, deep down, neither do you.”

And then he stands and walks out of the room, leaving me to stare after him, cold in the wake of his fire.

Synopsis

“Go to college,” they said. “Get a good job,” they said. “It will be a piece of cake.” Well, whoever they are, they lied. Sure, college was a blast, but after college, not so much. The finding a job to go with my expensive education, that part was not so easy. At least not until I was offered a position at the new club in town.

Life is defined by the little moments that have the power to change it completely. I never thought getting a cup of coffee would change mine, but it did. She did. She’s one of those moments.

He’s my boss.

She’s my employee.

I want him.

I can’t resist her.

Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

I’m going to start by saying that I devoured this book in only a few short hours. I’ve been a fan of Kaylee Ryan’s for quite some time and this story blew beyond every expectation I had going into it. This amazingly sensational read is told in alternating POVs and I adored every moment of this story! The fact that we got the chance to see both sides of the story from both of the main characters was perhaps my most favorite part of the whole book since you don’t have to second guess what the other one is thinking because you get to read it firsthand.

Kaylee Ryan has an absolutely extraordinary way with words and she knows how to capture a readers attention after only a few pages. This story was beautiful, intensive, steamy and a sexy read. The main characters, Crew and Berklee (oh how much I adore when authors use unique names) light a fire deep inside my heart and instantly captured my undivided attention. Oh how I loved, loved, loved this story and yet I’m lost for words because there is just so much I want to say but I can’t let it out without giving the entire storyline away. So all I can really say is that this book will put you in a trance and you will not, I repeat you will not be able to put it down, which means that I advise you to clear your schedule for an entire day so that you can really embrace Crew and Berklee’s undeniable romance!

Excerpt

I moved to stand where she’d be able to see me, not really caring if I was blocking the view for some other person waiting. I widened my stance and with my arms crossed over my chest, I kept my eyes trained as far back as I could see. My gaze shifted over the different travelers coming in; the only person I wanted to see was a brunette with crazy colored eyes.

And then I saw her.

The feeling that overtook me was like a drowning man getting his first breath of air. A starving man getting a fucking full-course meal.

She didn’t see me yet, but she would in time. There were maybe eighty people between us and she was nearing.

Her hair was braided over her shoulder, wisps of hair falling out and framing her face. She was wearing leggings and those damned boots of hers, but I was surprised to see her shirt was the girly type, long with cuts up the sides, nearly to her waist, and lacy sleeves that played peek-a-boo with the colors adorning her arm. She didn’t carry a bag, just her phone in one hand.

I licked my bottom lip before biting it gently, trying to stop the smile from spreading on my face. Didn’t want to look like a complete moron.

Forty feet.

Her gaze was down at the floor, no doubt watching where she was walking. It didn’t surprise me she was careful like that.

Thirty feet.

Look up, Asher…Look up.

Twenty feet.

Her face lifted and, like a magnet, her eyes locked on mine instantly.

And the smile on her face?

God damn.

There was no sense stopping my full-ass smile now, not with the one she just shot my way.

If you would have told me, four months ago, I would be the most celibate man in the history of earth, all for the glimpses of smiles from that girl there with more secrets behind her eyes than I could ever hope to uncover, I probably would have laughed in your face.

Four months ago, I was gearing up for my rookie season in South Carolina.

Four months ago, I was a kid with a big name, going to a team that had nothing to do with said big name.

Four months ago, it was rumored I would be the new hot shot in town. Nico certainly didn’t fail to show me the gossip sites, seemingly run by a bunch of puck bunnies.

But four months ago, I walked into Starbucks for a goodbye coffee with my sister, and met the girl with secrets.

And four months ago, I became addicted without so much as a taste.

Now that I’ve had that taste? Shit, I couldn’t wait for more.

Her, and her hot lush body, underneath mine. Again, and again and again.

I want her. I need her. I’m going to take her. In every way possible.

F*ck Boy is a filthy little story with a HEA…

Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

This is my very first Michelle McLoughney novel and I have to say that I would certainly read another book from this author in the future. F*ck Boy is a hot and steamy read that you will quickly devour in one sitting. Although this is a relatively short read, I could feel the intensity radiating off of these two main characters from the very beginning to the end. A short story surrounding a forbidden romance between an unlikely pair that quickly turns into something more… I also thought that the author did an extraordinary job packing in a lot of emotion and love into a few short chapters. Ava and Ridge certainly got my heart racing and it was a good story!

If you’re looking for something quick to read that will give you the HEA you’ve always wanted, then I strongly recommend picking up a copy of F*ck Boy by Michelle McLoughney!

When Jessie Evans, a Georgia Southern University cheerleader, leaves for her best friend’s wedding the last thing she expects is for the seat next to her to be taken. After all, she’d only canceled Seat 2A hours prior after catching her boyfriend cheating.

Kendal Vargas, son of a Spanish emigrant fashion guru, is on his way to Whistler for a “mancation”. Running to buy a neck pillow before his flight, Kendal bumps into Jessie Evans. Kendal is in a hurry. Kendal does not stop to help her. Kendal forgot his neck pillow and the plane is about to leave and hey—who could travel without a neck pillow?

Charmed by Jessie’s beauty, and watching her board his very plane, Kendal takes a whim and changes his seat to one he hopes would be next to her. Jessie ignores Kendal’s attempt to be chatty but when their connecting flight gets canceled overnight, the pair has a chance to make a real connection.

Seven years later, Jessie bumps into Kendal in the produce aisle of a Portland grocery store. No neck pillow is involved, except there is a beautiful little girl who looks just like him. Fate has given them another shot but will Kendal’s whims keep them apart?

Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

So I have to admit that this story started off slow (painfully slow at times), but in a way I think it works for this book. I was immediately drawn into the premise of the story and the idea of a second chance romance that never really had a chance the first time around. Jessie Evans (or Brooke Evans – if you’ve read this book you’ll completely understand) and Kendal Vargas are a unique pair who couldn’t be more different (at least in my opinion).

This story is told in alternating point-of-views, which is perhaps my absolute favorite kind of perspective to read because you get to see both sides of the story. You never wonder what the other one is thinking and you’re able to see firsthand two sides of a story. In this book the readers have an opportunity to see (aka read) these two characters falling in love and how a connection can form suddenly and stay with a person for years. I think that the author took an interesting approach with this story and while some things worked, other parts seemed too forced, which in turn tool away some of the enjoyment of their story. However, there were many scenes in which I absolutely adored!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this story to book lovers looking for a slow burning read that will have them second guessing past encounters with mysterious characters!
