Synopsis

As the bassist for the band Caged, the last three years have been one, long non-stop party. Sure, I’ve had some regrets. Everyone does. But getting trapped in a relationship isn’t one of them. I know good and well what happens when the attraction fades. I’ve seen it first hand. Love is a zero sum game, so why play? As long as I’m upfront about my feelings, no one gets hurt. Besides, I’m never in one place long enough to worry about tomorrow.

That is, until the band decided to take an extended hiatus in our hometown. That’s when I met Melody Sullivan. She’s the full-package. Whip smart and beautiful, with enough determination to take on anything life has in store. And the best part? Melody shares my philosophy on the fleeting nature of attraction. She doesn’t buy into the whole “happily ever after” crap anymore than I do. We’re perfect for each other. For now. And now is all I want.

With the expectations off the table, I can let my guard down and enjoy her company until the spark dies. And we both know it will. In a week, or a month. But until then, we’ll just keep having fun. The good kind, with lots of sex and no strings attached. And when it’s time to move on, we will. No drawn out goodbyes and no remorse.

That’s the plan, at least.

Note: Though part of the Sixth Street Bands Series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Recommended for 18+ for adult content and language.

About Jayne Frost

So…Who is Jayne?

As a writer you would think that would be a simple question…but it’s not. I spend so much time living in my characters heads, listening to their voices, that sometimes I forget about my own.

I guess I should start with the basics: the backstory. I was born and raised in California. At this point, I’m usually asked what it was like to grow up near the beach, but sadly, I don’t know. I grew up in the “other” part of California. Perfect for an aspiring writer, if you ask me. You learn a lot about keeping yourself busy when the nearest house is a mile away…and it belongs to your grandparents.

I spent all my time with my nose in a book, living vicariously through the characters, until I wrote a book of my own. I was ten at the time. It was a scintillating piece that cast the family pet as the protagonist.

By the time I went to high school, I moved on to romance. Why? Because I met my very own prince charming. I wrote love poems in my journal about the green-eyed boy who stole my heart. He promised, the way all storybook heroes do, to sweep me away and take me on a grand adventure. And he did.

We picked up and moved to the Lone Star State and began the story of us. The best stories begin without a road map or a compass. Veering off course makes the journey so much more interesting.

True to form, just when I thought my life was set, we started the next adventure. I traded in my cowboy boots and followed my green-eyed boy to Las Vegas. My home will always be in Texas, but my heart is anywhere that he is. Our beautiful daughter made the journey with us. Our son stayed in Texas, to write his own story.

Somehow, in the midst of the chaos that is our life, I find time to write. Writing is what I love. I might stray from romance every now and then if that is what moves me…but I always come back. Some of the stories don’t seem romantic at all. They are gritty stories about flawed characters that find each other and hold on tight. Those are the stories that speak to me. Because that’s life. I believe that every story should have a happy ending—even the difficult ones.

Synopsis

*** An explosive new standalone from the author of the Mob Boss series ***

FBI agent Braden Kane has been gong it alone ever since a family scandal sent him running straight from the Ivy League into Special Forces. That’s where he learned the hardest lesson of all — we’re all alone in the end. And nobody can save us.

When a raid goes terribly wrong, walking out is almost instinctual. Following the rules is for suckers. There’s only one way to get things done, and that’s to do it off the books. By the time he walks out, he knows there’s only one thing he’ll miss.

Her.

Nora Murphy never really had a choice. Law enforcement was in her blood.

Raised by an old-school Irishman in a houseful of brothers, she learned early on there was only one way to survive.

Be stronger. Be smarter. Be better.

There was no time for romance. And certainly no time for love. Which made tabling her attraction to friend and fellow agent Braden Kane a no-brainer. But Braden’s defection from the FBI opens the door to their relationship in a new and surprising way. Nora’s still getting her head around the possibilities when she’s assigned an important case involving a string of high-profile crimes with a shocking purpose. She can’t wait to bring down the ring of brash vigilantes — until a connection to Braden reveals itself in the investigation.

Now they’re on opposite sides of the law and order coin. Will their love be enough to bridge the gap? Will they survive long enough to find out?

They passed through the light and into the darkness near the water, then turned toward Manhattan Beach. She squealed a little when the water rushed up over her feet.

The sound of her laughter was somehow both childish and sexy. “Cold?”

She looked up at him with a smile and her expression was transformed. Maybe it was just the water, the visceral shock of the cold, but her face looked naked, the mask she wore at work folded up and set aside.

“Aren’t you going to take off your shoes?” she asked.

He lifted his hand, holding her heels. “Then I won’t be able to hold your hand.”

She laughed. “I can carry my own shoes!”

“I’m good,” he said.

“Don’t you want to put your feet in?” she asked.

He looked down at her, his smile spreading all the way from his heart up to his lips. “Truthfully?”

She nodded.

“I’d rather hold your hand.” He hesitated, holding her gaze as years of unspoken feelings fought to make themselves known. “I think I’ve been waiting years to hold your hand.”

“I’ve been waiting, too.”

He dropped her shoes in the sand and lifted his hands to her face. There was a distant voice urging him to be careful. To take it slow. To wait and see what came of his meeting in La Jolla tomorrow.

But that voice was no match for the one telling him he was finally home.

“Nora…” He slipped his hands into the hair at the back of her head, savored the feel of the silken strands against his fingers. “Do you know what it’s like to be so close to something so beautiful and have to pretend its nothing?”

She swallowed, licked her lips. “Yes,” she said. “I do.”

There was a split second when time seemed to stand still. The waves were silent, the wind still. There was only her. Only her face in his hands, her eyes a pool of blue fire, her lips full and parted. Waiting.

For him.

Then his mouth was on hers, his lips sinking into the pillowy softness of her. He held still at first, wanting to remember the arch of her neck in his hands, the exhale of her breath breathing life into his long-dead soul. A moment later she opened to him and there was no room for coherent thought. There was only the exploration of her satiny mouth as her tongue parried with his, every moment a burst of new sensation.

Not because he hadn’t been with many women. On the contrary; he’d kissed more women than he could count.

But not like this. Never like this.

His body flooded with desire so powerful it swarmed his mind like a shot of pure adrenaline. He was on fire for her, barely able to drag the breath in and out of his lungs.

It wasn’t just lust. It was a feeling of completion, the click of a final puzzle piece being put into place. It was one he hadn’t known he’d been missing, but now that she was here in his arms, he knew the picture of his life would never have been complete without her.

He angled her head and took their kiss deeper, sweeping her mouth slowly, relishing every inch of sweet warmth. She tasted like wine and strawberries, like the sea and the wind.

Her arms came around him and he pulled her closer, pressing her against his body, her exquisite softness molding to the hard planes of his body, filling all the empty places he hadn’t known existed.

He meant to take it easy. To take it slow. Both admirable notions that were thrown to the wind when she sighed into his mouth, pressed closer against him, her breasts crushed against his chest.

There was no more caution then. Only his hands on her body, mapping the fullness of her breasts, the taper of her waist, the swell of her hips, painfully close under the thin fabric of her dress. He was aching to strip her bare. To learn her body in the moonlight and make her his.

“Braden…” she gasped, pulling away, then coming back in to kiss him again. “Can we…”

He pulled back, looked into her eyes.

“Can we take it slow?” she asked.

He held her face between his hands. “We can do anything you want, Nora.”

Her smile was so pure and so true it almost brought him to his knees. “It’s not that I don’t want to…” She laughed. “I want to.”

He looked into her eyes. “Looking at you is all I need.”

“You’ve been looking at me a long time, Kane. You’re not sick of me yet?”

“I’m just getting started.” It came out more intense than he’d intended, all his pent-up feelings spilling over into his words.

“Sounds intriguing,” she said.

“I’m nothing if not intriguing.” He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, bent his head, kissed her softly. “Now let’s get you home before my ungentlemanly instincts take over again.”

He took her hand and felt like he was holding the moon.

Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

Perfect Imperfections – where do I even begin? Can I just start off by saying that this was a beautifully phenomenal and captivating story that I was immediately drawn to. As soon as I began reading this extraordinary book I couldn’t put it down (at least until I was forced to of course) and finished it as soon as I possibly could. This is my first J & L Wells book, but I am so happy this was the one because it had my full attention right from the beginning. These two are truly the perfect writing dual and I couldn’t even detect where one author ended and the other one began. Their intertwined writing style is breathtakingly perfect and it’ll leave the readers craving for more. In this sensational story we are taken on a journey of self-discovery and discovering that the one you’re with may not always be the one that you need.

It may have taken me a few pages to get into this story because I didn’t instantly connect with Natasha, but then I got to this one moment in the first chapter and I knew right away that she was about to become one of my favorite characters. I absolutely adored her and how she blossomed into the wonderful women that I cannot wait to see more of in future books!

I have been fortunate enough to have recently discovered the amazingly talented Abby Brooks! Wounded is one of those stories that is almost impossible to put down and one of those books that will leave you begging for more. Not only do we have this extraordinarily captivating storyline, but don’t even get me started on these truly one-of-a-kind characters! This is what I like to call an enemies to lovers kind of romance and man can I say that Bailey and Liam know how to make an impact. I absolutely adored these two and found myself instantly falling in love with them. I never wanted their story to end, but I have to day that Abby did an awesome job ending this book on a high note that leaves her readers wanting more.

On another note, this book will leave you with all the feels and have you in tears at more than a few scenes. If you are a fan of the enemies to lovers, then Wounded by Abby Brooks is the one for you!

Excerpt

I close the front door behind me and head straight to the piano. Sit at the bench and stare out through the open window and play.

I play for them.

I play for Tyler.

I play for who Michael and I were, and for who we’ve become. The music rips itself out of me and tears fall from my eyes, dropping on my hands, but still I play.

Before long, I sense movement at the doorway. My fingers slow and then stop, cutting off the melody on a harsh note.

“Don’t stop.” Liam sounds groggy. “It’s beautiful.”

“It hurts,” I say, sniffing.

“Ahhh.” There’s more movement and then he’s sitting next to me, his shoulder pressing against mine, his sleep-warmed skin almost too hot for me in my agony. “That’s why it’s beautiful.”

I pull my hand from the keys and put them in my lap. “There’s nothing beautiful about pain.”

“Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain.”  Liam puts his hands on the keys, lets them wander around a melody. “I think Bob Dylan said that.”

The urge to lean into him, to borrow some strength from his size and his warmth is so strong I almost succumb to it.

Almost.

Instead, I put my hands on the keys and wind my melody around his.

“What’s wrong, Bailey?” Liam keeps his voice low, almost a whisper.

“It’s just a bad day,” I whisper in return.

His fingers chase the melody towards mine. His skin brushes mine and chills rush through my body. I stop playing and stare up at him.

“Why are you being nice to me?”

“Maybe I’m still mostly asleep.” Liam smiles, the moonlight streaming through the window catching the scar winding down his face.

Without thinking, I run my finger along it. My touch light, just a whisper of contact. “Does it still hurt?”

Liam leans into my hand, pressing my palm against his cheek, and closes his eyes. “Deeply.”

The low rumble of his voice touches the aching part of my soul and I know he’s not talking about the scar. I pull my hand away and study his face as he opens his eyes and stares down at me. The space between us takes on a life of its own, shrinking and contracting with each and every one of our breaths. I lean into him, needing contact. Needing sensation and oblivion and a reason to step outside of myself for a while.

“Today’s the day they died.” I blink several times but don’t look away. “My parents.”

“How?”

I shake my head and the world spins drunkenly. It hurts to be this exposed, as if my whole body is a raw nerve, our words grinding against it until the pain forces me to cry out.

“I’m sorry,” he says, bringing his hand to my cheek and threading his fingers into my hair.

I lean into him and close my eyes, swimming in grief and guilt, desperate to feel anything but the way I’m feeling right now. I lick my lips. Open my eyes and find him close. So close. He drops his hand from my cheek, his eyes searching my face.

There’s a moment. The two of us knowing what’s about to happen and trying to decide if we should let it, and then Liam kisses me. His hands slide up my arms and clutch my shoulders. His lips are warm and supple against mine. Our breath fills the room, twining with the rustle of fabric as I bring my hands to his back and grip his shirt in my fists.

I breathe him in. His clean skin and the scent of his cologne are so foreign to me. They’re unlike any of the smells that I sometimes imagine still linger around this house, triggering memories with the power to bring me to my knees. Liam is different. Nothing about him reminds me of my past, and there’s salvation there. Safety in his newness. In his total lack of knowledge of me from before. I can be anything with him.

Our kiss deepens, the stubble of his beard scraping the delicate skin on my cheeks. I open to him, lean into him, and his tongue darts out to meet mine.

He pulls back but keeps his hands on my face. “Have you been drinking?”

I nod. “It’s a bad day.”

Liam’s eyes burn into mine, moving across the planes of my face. He takes a breath like he wants to speak, only to close his mouth and look away. “I’m sorry, Bailey,” he says after a moment. “I don’t want this because you’re drunk and hurting. And I know, deep down, neither do you.”

And then he stands and walks out of the room, leaving me to stare after him, cold in the wake of his fire.

Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

Since I can’t really tell you about this amazingly original story without giving away some super crucial and surprising details, this is just going to be a review filled with some heavy FANGIRL-ing moments. So please bare with me because once I am finished, you’ll all be jumping at the chance to one-click this one!

First off can I just say how awesome it would be if Amazon and Goodreads would allow us to rate a phenomenal story like Missing Grace with more than five stars. Its like come on get with the program, as a book lover (and reviewer) I sometimes come across stories like this one where I feel like a five star rating just isn’t enough. With that being said, I am giving this book a THOUSAND star rating because yes S.L. Scott truly deserves that high of a praise for writing this breathtakingly captivating story.

I must regrettably admit that this is the first book I’ve read from this author, but I have to say that I am glad that Missing Grace was the story that popped my S.L. Scott book “cherry” (haha – pun fully intended) because it is by far one of my top 2017 favorite reads! So I kinda wish that I counted the number of times that this book had me in tears and left me on the edge of my seat, but I couldn’t because I did not want to take my eyes off of my kindle for a single second. This extraordinary story literally captured my full attention and as much as I didn’t want to, I totally fell asleep mid-read (when your kindle smacks you in the face you know it’s time to go to bed, even when all you want to do is finish it).

Overall, this book will take you on a whirlwind of emotions along with some twists and turns. This is without a doubt one of those stories that will have you anticipating the end, while not wanting to let it go at the same time. S.L. Scott you are officially on my list of favorite authors and I cannot wait to see what you come up with next (and of course checking out some of your previous releases when I get a spare moment in my overwhelmingly hectic life)!

Synopsis

There’s no such thing as too much fun…
Wrong.
Incredibly, immeasurably, categorically false.
Try: It’s all fun and games until someone ends up in the tabloids.
Again.

Kade Edenfield was rock royalty. If every rock god in history gathered for dinner, his seat would be at the head of the table. He was that good. His band was elevated to a level few ever reached, and he was having the time of his life.

Until one misstep too many landed him on the front page of every gossip rag around the globe, and the band’s label decided to saddle them with a PR priss whose sole mission in life was to suck the fun right out of his.

He wanted her gone.

Until he realized he just plain wanted her.

Aubrey Taylor didn’t ask to be assigned to babysit a band full of troublemakers, but she wasn’t given a choice. Wanted or not, she intended to fix the mess they’d made. She’d do it quickly, efficiently, and then she’d get the hell out of there. Unfortunately, after meeting their openly hostile singer—the one with the notoriously menacing stare—it was clear she was in over her head. When Kade made a point to challenge her at every turn, unafraid of using intimidation to get her to back down, she found herself in even deeper trouble.

While she ‘officially’ resented and feared him, their power struggle secretly turned her on.

She desperately wanted to win their little standoff, but what was she supposed to do when she realized she wanted him even more?

Review

I generously received this ARC from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review…

So Chasing Kade happens to be my first Anna Paige read, but I am hoping to redeem that as soon as I possibly can. I literally could not put down this book and was already asking the author when the next release was before I even finished it because I’m not sure how long I can wait to read the next installment in this my anticipated series! Since finishing this story a few days ago, I haven’t been able to pick up and read another book because it has left me in totally book hangover mode. I am serious, I literally have a ton of upcoming ARCS to read and this story will not leave my mind. I actually re-read the last few chapters because I did NOT want it to end, even though I knew it had to.

This story had so many surprising twist and turns, that I couldn’t even anticipate what was going to happen next in the storyline. I absolutely adore books that keep you on the edge of your seats and did Anna Paige deliver. Not only that, but did I mention that this book was HOT, HOT and well HOT! My heart and body was literally on fire after reading several of these hot and heavy chapters. At one point (you will totally know the scene when you read it) I had to put my kindle down because I couldn’t focus after reading that intensively sexy (and have I mentioned hot and heavy) scene. If you aren’t in love with this beautifully written story after that scene, then something is seriously wrong with you (not really, but I hope every single reader falls in love with Kade and Aubrey like I did).

Okay! So I am going to end this and just tell you that you need to purchase this book ASAP because you are going to want Kade to be your next book boyfriend, but sorry girls he is already taken by ME (and Aubrey, but we’ll just pretend like she’s not here right now). I mean it ladies, BACK OFF! Oh right, back to the matter of telling you to go get the book. I MEAN IT, GO GET IT RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT! I can honestly tell you that you will not, I repeat not, be disappointed (trust me, you know you want to).

Teaser 5

Excerpt

I took her small, soft hand into my much larger one and gave it a firm shake. “Call me Kade,” I told her in an almost friendly tone. Her astronomical hotness level didn’t cancel out my feelings about her being there. “With two Mr. Edenfield’s and twins to boot, it’s hard enough to tell us apart. No need to make it harder.”

She nodded and looked down to where I still held her hand in mine, her eyes skimming the tattoos that snaked up my exposed forearm. I let her look her fill, taking the opportunity to do the same. She was a head shorter than me, though most women were; her eyes were definitely gray but I was willing to bet they would look blue under the right circumstances. Her perfume was subtle, crisp with a hint of musk. I had to fight not to lean in and smell her.

Her eyes suddenly flashed to mine, as if she knew I was close to doing just that, and she tugged her hand away, stepping back. “James says I’ll be sharing a bus with you and your brother, is that all right?”

“James?” I chuckled at her formality. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call him that.”

“It’s his name, isn’t it?” She frowned, tossing a glance over at Jimmy like she thought maybe she’d been calling him the wrong name.

“Yeah, everyone just calls him Jimmy, that’s all.”

Her mouth formed a perfect ‘o’ and I had the disturbing urge to reach up and sweep my thumb across her lips.

“Does it bother him to be called James?” She sounded worried. “I just assumed…”

I put a hand out and lightly touched her shoulder, trying to calm the panicked look in her eyes. I was only partially motivated by my almost uncontrollable need to have my hands on her. “Relax, polite police. You’re gonna pop a blood vessel. It’s not as serious as all that. We’re just really informal. You’ll get used to it.” I looked her up and down, assessing her outfit. “Trust me, in no time we will have you in ripped jeans and concert tees.” I smiled.

Why was I smiling at her? And why couldn’t I seem to stop?

She shook her head, frowning. “I don’t think my boss…”

I glanced around the parking lot. “Is your boss here?”

“Well, no…” She hedged, looking intrigued.

“Then who cares? Besides, if you’re going to travel with us and be at all of our events, wearing formal looking stuff like that,” I motioned the length of her body, “will make you stick out.”

She did that shoulder squaring thing again, trying to slip back into her uptight niche where she felt safe. “I’m not here to party with the band or fall into the groupie crowd, Kade. I’m here to pull your collective asses out of the fire.”

The way my name rolled off her lips made my dick spring to life.

Not good. At. All.

And the no-nonsense persona she was working so hard to maintain was making her even hotter than she already was.

“Now, back to the issue of my lodging,” she began, “is it agreeable that I stay on the bus with you and your brother?”

I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing, she was hilariously uptight. I’d work on that, though. “Yes, Aubrey, it’s agreeable. Or would you prefer to be called Miss Taylor?”

“And why would you assume it’s not Mrs.?” She bit back at my snarky tone.

I glanced at her left hand and shrugged. “No ring, and what husband in his right mind would leave his wife all alone with five bed-hopping, bar-brawling, trouble-making rock stars?”

“I’m happy to hear that you’re aware of your shortcomings.”

“Nothing about me is short, sweetheart.” I quipped, giving her a slow wink.

Shit, I was flirting with her. What was the matter with me?

Her eyes flashed and she narrowed them on me as she looked up. “I didn’t work this hard for this long to allow the likes of you to call me sweetheart, Mr. Edenfield. You are to address me only as Aubrey or Ms. Taylor, understand? I am not now, nor will I ever be, your damn sweetheart.”

She spun on her heel and stalked off in the other direction, probably to gather her stuff.

She was self-righteous, uptight, judgmental, and too prissy for her own good.

God help me, everything about her turned me on.

About Anna Paige

Anna Paige is the author of the Broken series; Broken Ground, Flawlessly Broken, and All the Broken Pieces, as well as the Thrill of the Chase series. The first TotC novel–Chasing Kade–is releasing in March.

She lives in a rural town in North Carolina where the only activity is the rhythmic color change of the solitary stoplight and a very real threat of being carried away by mosquitoes. The only alternative to terminal boredom is writing, making life interesting if only on the page.

Anna is happily married, with one amazing son and a pair of hilarious pets. When she’s not writing, she’s trying to make a dent in her TBR pile. Given that she’s constantly adding new titles to the list, the chances of her ever finishing are slim.

And she’s completely fine with that.

Review

I generously received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review…

If you are looking for a short and sweet love at first sight kind of story then look no more because that is exactly what you will get when you pick up a copy of Cherry Picked by Kristen Hope Mazzola! I think that the author did an extraordinary job with character development in just a few short chapters. You can’t help but instantly fall in love with Chase (a young hockey player for the Otters) and Nikki (a young ballerina). This is certainly a “one-sitter” read that will have your heart singing at the insta-love between these two! Cherry Picked is certainly a must read so make sure you pick up a copy!

Excerpt

I saw her and my world stopped dead in an instant. Everything around me faded to black as I got lost in her from afar.

She was sitting alone in the corner of the coffee shop, biting her lower lip as she read from the yellowing pages of a book with a broken spine and a tattered cover. Her face was soft and full of anticipation as the pages flipped by, and I craved to know what part she was on as she read from my favorite book.

I was hooked.

I was mesmerized.

She was mine. Already. She just doesn’t know it yet.

And I didn’t even know her name.

A minor detail.

“Chase?” Hannah nudged my elbow from the opposite side of the table we occupied like we had every weekend for the last few weeks.

“Huh?” My eyes snapped to my sister as she stole me away from daydreaming about the gorgeous brunette I craved to know.

“Are you going to be able to go home for Thanksgiving?” she asked, frustration lacing her tone.

I shook my head. “Not with the schedule we have.” Our family was incredibly close and I knew it was going to break my mom’s and sister’s hearts that I wasn’t going to be able to make it home for the holidays this year, but that was part of the sacrifice I was going to have to make for my career.

My eyes continued to wander to the petite brunette. Her hair was long and it swept over her right shoulder. She was in black yoga pants and an oversized tank top cinched at her waste by a ridiculously adorable bright green fanny pack. I wondered if she had just gotten done at the gym or if she was just being comfortable on this lazy Sunday morning in the city.

My sister continued to steal my attention. “How has practice been?” Hannah was trying to keep the conversation moving and I was being a complete jerk, but I couldn’t pull away from the sheer beauty only paces away, which felt like a million miles.

I propped my head up with my hand so I could see my cute girl out of the corner of my eye while still kind of looking at Hannah. “We’ve only had a few practices but I am enjoying it and learning a lot.”

“That’s really exciting. I can’t believe my baby brother is a famous hockey star now.” She giggled a little as excitement perked the corners of her lips.

“I’m far from famous yet, sis. We’ll see what happens once the season actually starts.” I took the last sip of my black coffee, using the opportunity to catch my girl as she laughed to herself while she read. Her enjoyment was radiating sunshine as she devoured the novel.

“Whatever, you’re famous in my head. I brag about you all the time.” Hannah dramatically rolled her eyes at me before moving the conversation right along. “I had rounds with one of your teammates’ wives last night.”

I knew a lot about most of my teammates’ home lives, and none that I knew of had a wife that worked at Flushing. “Really? Who?” I asked, trying to sound more interested than I really was.

“This really sweet nurse named Karla. I obviously was bragging about you while we were in the breakroom grabbing coffee.”

I laughed. “That’s Brayden Cox’s girlfriend. They have a kid together, and they’re practically married.” I felt like a teenage girl gossiping about guys in Teen Bop, but if I could do it with anyone, it was Hannah.

Hannah shrugged. “So, yeah, his wifey. Wait, Cox? Isn’t that your all-time hero or something?”

My face got hot. “Yeah…yeah he really is. I used to wear his number in high school.”

“Well, isn’t that just the cutest thing ever.” Hannah’s pager started blaring and she shot up while checking the codes that were coming through. “Duty calls,” she huffed, throwing her purse over her shoulder.

I jumped up and pulled her in for a quick hug. “See you later, Hannah banana. Go save some lives.”

She squeezed my shoulder before turning to leave. “Bye Chase. Call me later so we can schedule another coffee date.”

My sister was great at making sure we spent time together when we could. I appreciated her wanting to hang out with me, but I was thankful in that moment to be able to focus on the adorable stranger—that was going to be rectified soon enough, soon she’d be so much more than a stranger.

Without overthinking it, I walked right over to the fading brown loveseat my girl was cuddled up on. “One of us in this very room is in fact the murderer,” I half-whispered, taking a seat in the armchair across from her. I damned the coffee table between us—just one more obstacle I was going to have to overcome to get to her.

Her round smoky eyes smoldered as they connected with mine. Without missing a beat, she retorted with, “Oh, yes. I’ve no doubt in my own mind that we have been invited here by a madman—probably a dangerous homicidal lunatic.”

The way she giggled as the words left her lips was intoxicating. It was like cupid’s arrow had struck my heart. “I’m Chase.” I reached out my hand and she took it, and the simple touch sent fire through my body.

“Nicolette, but everyone calls me Nikki. Nice to meet you, Chase.” Her smile ripped across her face and crashed into my heart. “You’re a Christie fan, I take it?”

I leaned back in the chair, trying to look relaxed even though I craved to scoop her up into my arms and never let her go ever again. “You are holding my favorite book.” I reached into the duffle bag I had packed, ready for practice later on that afternoon, and pulled out my very own copy, which was being held together with scotch tape.

Her eyes softened a bit. “Isn’t it nice when a book recommends a person?”
